Spotlight on Local Business: edit | Sustainable Home Organizing

In the heart of Evergreen, a new business is making waves. Julie Kailus recently launched edit | sustainable home organizing, a venture that combines her passion for sustainability and organization. Drawing on her years of experience in content creation and design, Julie has created a unique service aimed at helping people declutter and live more intentionally, all while embracing environmentally responsible practices.

From Words to Spaces: Julie's Journey to edit

Julie’s career path has taken her from journalism to marketing, and now, to sustainable home organizing. "My career has spanned early, longtime work as a journalist for the outdoor adventure and sustainability industries to content creation, strategy, marketing, and design," she says. At the heart of each role, she has relied on one key skill: editing. "Simplifying, structuring, and organizing are intuitive for me. I decided to apply this professional skill to physical spaces."

This shift came after an unexpected layoff, which prompted Julie to take control of her path. "I realized that organizing my external world has always been an unconscious way of freeing up my internal world, allowing me to dream and dare," she explains. The move from digital editing to physical spaces has been a natural progression for Julie, allowing her to turn her natural talents into something tangible that can benefit others in a profound way.

Sustainability at the Core

What sets edit apart in the Evergreen community is its commitment to sustainable living. Julie is deeply involved with the Evergreen Sustainability Alliance, a local nonprofit focused on helping neighbors live more responsibly and with greater resilience. She brings this same mission into her work by not only helping clients declutter and organize but also teaching them how to live more intentionally with less. "It's about sustaining that mindset and lifestyle," Julie emphasizes.

Her sustainable home organizing services range from starter packages to intensive weekend sessions, all designed to simplify clients’ lives while reducing their environmental footprint. One standout offering is her sustainable containering solutions, which upcycle materials to give items new life. She’s especially interested in helping people downsize, empty their nests and solve for small spaces. Julie also plans to create a local marketplace for reusing or rehoming items, ensuring that nothing goes to waste.

A Creative and Personal Process

For Julie, the organizing process is more than just removing and rearranging objects; it's a creative endeavor. "The moment I enter a room, I can see how things could fit together more efficiently," she shares. Her method is hands-on and personal, beginning with an intake interview to understand her clients’ needs and goals. "Editing a home is very personal, almost like a therapy session," she says. "We all need to be heard and validated." This empathetic approach ensures that her clients feel comfortable and supported as they work together to create sustainable, organized spaces.

Looking Ahead: Growing the Mission

Julie's plans for edit include expanding her services beyond Evergreen and building partnerships with realtors, designers, and sustainability-focused organizations. "If you own a home, you are a potential client," she says. With a goal of doing more weekend intensives around Colorado and showcasing her upcycled sustainable containering in local businesses, the future of edit looks bright.

Her advice to aspiring small business owners? "Put in the work. Expose your authentic self. Every day, remember the 'why' behind what you do." For Julie, that "why" is clear: helping people live simpler, more intentional lives through sustainable organizing.
